They assume years in the industry equal progress.
They don't.
The Comfort Trap
Familiar work feels productive.
It isn't always.
Repeating what you already know is practice.
It is not automatically growth.
You get faster without getting better.
The briefs get easier.
The thinking gets smaller.
One day you realise you've been doing the same year on repeat.
The trap is exactly this.
It doesn't feel like standing still.
It feels like experience.
What You Actually Have to Do
Seek the work making you uncomfortable.
Study the typography you do not fully understand.
Sit with the design irritating you until you know why.
Take the brief scaring you over the one you know cold.
Show the work to someone who will tell you the truth 〰️ not the version protecting your feelings.
None of it is dramatic.
None of it shows up in your portfolio overnight.
But it compounds.
Compounding is what separates designers who grow from designers who simply get older.
The Freelance Problem
Nobody pushes you forward when you work alone.
No review.
No manager.
No structure.
The freedom is real.
So is the drift.
Your admin improves.
Your invoicing tightens.
Your client management gets sharper.
Your design thinking quietly plateaus.
Treat your own development like a client commitment.
Scheduled.
Protected.
Non-negotiable.
