The Easiest Brief Is Rarely the Best One

Easy briefs feel like wins.

The client knows what they want.
Scope is clear.
Direction is set.

You deliver, they approve, the invoice goes out.
Efficient.

But efficient and valuable are not the same thing.
And if every brief on your calendar is easy,
something is quietly going wrong.

What You Trade for the Speed

An easy brief is one where the client has already made the decisions.

Typography, colour, layout, structure
〰️ all specified.
Your role is implementation.

That work is fast because it is shallow.
No problem to define.
No judgement to apply.
No thinking the client has not already done for you.

This affects three things at once.

Your capability stops developing.
Growth happens at the edges of what you can do,
and execution work keeps you in the middle.

Your portfolio gets thinner.
Easy brief work shows you can follow instructions.
It does not show the thing clients actually hire designers for.

Your rates get capped.
Implementation is measurable and common.
Problem solving is neither.

The relationship ceiling sits low and stays there.

When Easy Is Fine · and When It Isn't

Easy briefs are not the enemy.
Some of them are genuinely good work.

A repeat client who trusts you and needs a fast turnaround on familiar work 〰️ that is a healthy relationship paying you fairly for known work.

A production run that funds the harder, slower projects
〰️ that is a calendar working as it should.

The problem is not the occasional easy brief.
The problem is the calendar made entirely of them.

Look at the last five briefs you accepted.
How many required you to clarify a problem before solving it?
How many had you proposing direction the client had not considered?

If the answer is none, the next brief needs to be different.
Even if it is slower.
Even if it is uncomfortable.
Even if the easy one is sitting in your inbox looking attractive.

Closing thought

Easy briefs are not bad.
A calendar built only on easy briefs is.

The work that challenges you is the work that builds you.
The work that builds you is the work that eventually commands the rates you want.

Take the easy ones when they make sense.
Take the difficult ones when they don't.

Just make sure you are still taking the difficult ones.
