- Description: A typographic poster built from white pipework. Elbows, flanges and collars bend into letterforms, while a cloud-like outline holds the composition together.

## Why this week’s poster

I wanted to explore typography built from something rigid.

Pipes are designed to carry things from one place to another. Straight sections, elbows and connectors. Practical objects with a limited range of movements.

But put them together differently, and they become letterforms.

The title, *Pipe Dreams*, gave the idea another layer. Something functional turned into something playful, with the pipes twisting and looping inside a cloud-like outline.

## The build

- **Objects.** White pipework built from straight sections, elbows, flanges and connecting collars.
- **Letters.** Individual pipe sections arranged into letterforms, with bends and overlaps creating the shapes.
- **Composition.** Four repeated arrangements stacked vertically to establish rhythm across the poster.
- **Colour.** A flat teal background contrasts with the glossy white pipework.
- **Lighting.** Soft highlights and shadows give the pipes volume without overpowering their structure.
- **Outline.** A continuous white cloud-like border ties the letterforms together and reinforces the idea behind the title.
- **Type.** Small supporting text sits between the repeated forms, keeping the focus on the artwork.

## What worked

- The combination of rigid pipework and soft cloud outlines creates an interesting contrast.
- The connecting collars and flanges make the letterforms feel constructed rather than simply shaped.
- Repeating the composition four times gives the poster a strong visual rhythm.
- The limited colour palette keeps a complicated arrangement of objects relatively simple.

## What I'd push next time

- Refine some of the tighter overlaps to improve letter recognition.
- Experiment with different pipe diameters to introduce more variation.
- Explore how the concept might work with fewer connecting elements and a simpler structure.

## Closing

Typography doesn't always need to begin with a typeface.

Sometimes it begins with an object, a material or a simple construction method.

*Pipe Dreams* is an experiment in finding letterforms within the limitations of ordinary objects, and seeing how far those limitations can be pushed.
